Tufting Your First Piece: A Beginner's Guide
Your H1 Lite Kit comes with the essentials to get tufting: a tufting gun, frame, primary cloth, yarn, and the tools you need to start.For the finishing stage, you'll also need one of the following to secure the back:
- A heat press and hot-melt powder
- Latex adhesive
- Spray adhesive
Want a cleaner, more detailed finish? Keep a pair of scissors and a carving trimmer nearby for trimming and shaping your rug.
Assemble your frame, then stretch your primary cloth across it.
Your cloth should feel firm like a drum: smooth, tight, and free of wrinkles. Re-tighten it whenever it starts to loosen while you work.
Project your design onto the cloth, or draw it directly by hand.
One important thing: your rug is tufted from the back, so flip your design horizontally before drawing. It will appear the correct way around once you turn it over.
Feed the yarn through your gun, following the threading path shown in the guide.
Follow your outline, then fill in each section with yarn.
Hold the gun straight against the cloth, with the needle pointing directly into the fabric.
Start with simple shapes, take your time, and let the lines guide you.
Once your design is complete, secure the yarn on the back.
Use heat press, latex adhesive, or spray adhesive, then attach your backing fabric. This keeps every tuft in place and gives your rug a clean finish.

Why Is the Yarn Breaking, Jamming, or Not Feeding?

Why Is My Piece Shedding, Showing Gaps, or Looking Uneven?
A small amount of loose fiber is normal, but continued shedding may mean the backing has not been secured. Reduce gaps by adding yarn strands or spacing rows more closely. For even lines, maintain steady movement, consistent fabric tension, and a 90-degree gun angle.
How Do I Finish My Piece and Care for the Gun?
Secure the back with rug adhesive or TPU adhesive powder, attach the backing cloth, and trim the surface and edges. Allow traditional adhesive to cure fully. After use, unplug the gun and remove yarn fibers from around the needle and scissor channel.
